Navigating the map: Each marker links to a list of diary entries for this place, of what happened there and when, and a Street View panorama of today’s location versus historic photograph (if available). If you are reading this on mobile, a full list of markers is available in the burger menu top right.

Editorial notes

  • This is a personal project, mapping places in Victor Klemperer’s diaries to the actual Dresden locations in Google street view and historic photographs of the Old Dresden.
For any comments or corrections please get in touch with contact@victor-klemperers-dresden.net
  • Quoting a philologist proved to be a challenge: How to make succinct language even shorter, whilst staying true to its meaning?
As a rule of thumb, when quoting, I included the actual location and the surrounding paragraph, or sentences. The quotes are linked to the pages where quotes are taken from, not the pages on which the diary entry starts (the entry dates)
  • Historic imagery mostly comes from AltesDresden.de. Not for all places was I able to find photographs. Where possible I tried to match Google street view locations with photographs or at least give a sense of how this particular street would have looked back then.
The image credits on each page link to more images for that particular place.
  • Despite my best efforts the list of Dresden locations might be incomplete. If you spot missing locations or mistakes please get in touch via contact@victor-klemperers-dresden.net
    • Locations with Umlauts – The scanning software seemed to struggle transcribing German Umlauts. The same word could therefore appear in multiple versions, I might not have found all of them. Example:  Münchner Platz: Munchner Platz, Miinchner Platz,  M—nchner vs. Munchener Platz.
    • Synonyms – Strasse (Road/Street), Allee (avenue), Gasse (alley) – KV mentions Conradi living on Deutsche Kaiserallee (today Mendelsohnallee), however the Dresden CityWiki is listing Conradi on Kaiserstrasse (today Robert-Blum-Strasse) – two completely different locations.
    • Some street names I could not find anywhere online, potentially due to typos eg Marggrafenstrasse (book) vs Markgrafenstrasse (Altesderesde.de/ Google Maps), therefore I could not match with certainty.
    • Some places simply no longer exist, not even by a different name, therefore I was unable to locate them.
    • I might have genuinely overlooked some
  • Street View vs maps – for some locations (e.g Bürgerwiese 7)  Google street view was not available. Sometimes this is because it is a pedestrian area.
In these instances I’ve included maps instead. Switching to Satellite View and zooming in would give you an idea of today’s architecture and the layout of space, or just drop the little Streetview person into the map.
